Our Story

Hi!  I'm Julia, the one woman show at Bamboo Hill.  I live in Maryland with my husband, 2 kids and 3 cats.  By day, I am an audiologist and work with Deaf and Hard of Hearing children.  In my off hours, you'll find me making all of the items  in my shop.

I come from a family of creative people - musicians, designers, artists and seamstresses, but after a disastrous sewing experience in 7th grade home economics class, no one was more surprised than me when I decided to make a quilt in high school.  It was (mostly) a sucess and I haven't stopped sewing since then.  My sewing machine has travelled around the country with me, to graduate school in Michigan, an internship in South Carolina and finally back to Maryland.  I have sewn at card tables, at my desk and at the dining room table.

These days I am lucky to have a room in our house to call my own.  My studio window looks out on the bamboo covering the hill in our backyard, inspiring my shop name.  I am so grateful to work with beautiful fabric and make items that will be enjoyed by others.

I love working with a variety of materials including cotton, wool, canvas, cork and leather.  Some of my favorite fabrics include Rifle Paper Co and Pendleton wool.  I strive to reduce waste in my studio and love the challenge of trying to use every last bit of fabric I can.  This challenge has inspired some of my most popular products!

Many of the materials I use are rescues - scrap or remnant pieces that would otherwise end up in the landfill.  It is rewarding to know that I am using sustainable practices and my customers love that they often have truly one of a kind items.
